Hormonal Handicapping

Making sure that your hormones are helping instead of hindering can go a long way toward restoring a healthy libido and helping you deal with depression. Good sex is powerful medicine!

If you are male, have your testosterone level checked. Low testosterone can dampen your desire. Same thing applies to low thyroid, and this can affect both men and women. Hypothyroidism can create symptoms of depression.

You read about postpartum depression. This kind of depression is directly related to hormone fluctuations. Women who are experiencing postpartum depression usually have minimal interest in sex. This tends to be fleeting, and once hormonal equilibrium has been restored, interest in sex usually returns, as well.

At the other end of the reproductive years, menopause brings on all manner of hormonal symptoms — once again, it's like going through puberty, although this time, in reverse. Insomnia, hot flashes, mood swings, and the physical discomforts of vaginal dryness and low libido can make sexual intercourse both uncomfortable and unsatisfying. If these symptoms are negatively affecting your quality of life, talk with your doctor. You don't have to suffer through menopause.
