Getting Serious

If you've decided to reactivate that gym or health club membership, you're going to be faced with an array of machines and devices. Which ones you decide to use will depend on what goals you're aiming for. Which is better — free weights or machines? Both have advantages and disadvantages.

Free weights are better for the more advanced exerciser. Free weights will allow you to create your own range of motion, which will allow maximum growth and stimulation of the muscle. Machines will constrict the range of motion but will also reduce the chance of injury. Machines are often used for rehabilitation purposes, as they follow a specific program and can be regulated for intensity.

Here's where it's important to consult with a fitness trainer, to develop the program that's right for you.

Alert

Always speak with a trainer on staff regarding questions about proper use of exercise machines. You'll get more out of the experience, you'll learn how to best use the equipment, and you'll reduce your risk of injury.
