The following medications are currently prescribed as antidepressants. All carry the FDA black box warning for restricted use in children and adolescents.
A chemical cousin of tricyclic antidepressant medications, such as Tofranil and Elavil. Used to treat people who suffer from obsessions and compulsions.
Asendin (amoxapine); Aventyl (nortriptyline)
A tricyclic antidepressant sometimes prescribed in the treatment of bipolar disorder and in patients who have not responded well to other antidepressants.
Celexa (citalopram hydrobromide)
An SSRI used in treating depression and generalized anxiety disorder (GAD). Lexapro is the next generation of Celexa.
A selective serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor (SNRI) used in treating major depressive disorder, generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), and for the management of diabetic peripheral neuropathic pain (DPNP).
Desyrel (trazodone HCl)
An antidepressant used in the treatment of depression and occasionally prescribed as a sedative.
Effexor (venlafaxine HCl)
An SNRI or serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor used to treat clinical depression and anxiety disorders.
A tricyclic antidepressant used to treat depression and chronic pain.
A monoamine oxidase inhibitor used in treating major depressive disorder. Used as a skin patch (transdermal).
An antipsychotic used in treating bipolar disorder.
Lexapro (escitalopram oxalate)
An SSRI (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor) used to treat major depressive disorder and generalized anxiety disorder. The next generation of Celexa.
Combines an antidepressant with an anti-anxiety medication. Used in treating moderate to severe depression associated with moderate to severe anxiety.
A tricyclic used in treating bipolar depression.
Luvox (fluvoxamine maleate)
An SSRI (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor) used to treat depression and OCD (obsessive-compulsive disorder).
A monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAO) prescribed for patients with depression. Used after patients have failed to respond to other drugs.
Nardil (phenelzine sulfate)
A monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAO) prescribed for patients with mixed anxiety and depression. Used after patients have failed to respond to other drugs.
A tricyclic used in treating depression and attention deficit disorders.
Norpramin (desipramine HCl)
A tricyclic used in treating depression.
A second-generation tricyclic used to lift mood in patients with depression. Also used to treat chronic pain.
Parnate (tranylcypromine sulfate)
A monoamine oxidase (MAO) inhibitor. Works by increasing levels of the neurotransmitters serotonin, epinephrine, and norepinephrine. Used to treat moderate to severe depression and the depressive phases of bipolar disorder.
Paxil (paroxetine HCl)
An SSRI used in treatment of major depressive disorder and anxiety disorders.
Pexeva (paroxetine mesylate)
An SSRI used in treating depression and panic disorders.
Prozac (fluoxetine HCl)
The first SSRI and the most widely prescribed antidepressant in the world. Blocks reuptake of serotonin.
A tetracyclic antidepressant used in treating moderate to severe depression.
Sarafem (fluoxetine HCl)
An SSRI used in treating premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD).
An antidepressant used in treating bipolar disorder.
A tricyclic used to treat depression. Effective in people whose depression is associated with alcoholism, or a result of another disease, such as cancer.
A tricyclic used to treat depression.
Combination of olanzapine, the active ingredient in Zyprexa, and fluoxetine, the active ingredient in Prozac. Used in treating bipolar disorder.
Tofranil (imipramine hydrochloride)
A tricyclic used to treat depression.
Tofranil-PM (imipramine pamoate)
A tricyclic. Usually taken once daily, at bedtime, to treat major depressive disorder.
A combination of an antidepressant and a tranquilizer. A tricyclic. Contains the same ingredients as Elavil and Trilafon and should not be used with these drugs.
Member of the tricyclic class of antidepressants. Has been prescribed for use in withdrawn and inactive patients and close monitoring is required, due to possibility of severe side effects.
Wellbutrin (bupropion HCl)
Antidepressant often prescribed for treatment of seasonal affective disorder (SAD).
Zoloft (sertraline HCl)
SSRI class of antidepressants. Acts as a serotonin reuptake inhibitor.
Zyban (bupropion HCl)
SSRI class of antidepressants. Acts as a norepinephrine and dopamine reuptake inhibitor.
