Some parents call the five-to-ten years the “golden years” of parenting: the time when the child is “self-contained.” Your child is able to dress and feed herself, sleep through the night, use the bathroom, and have a rational conversation, before the intensity and turbulence of the teen years. For some parents, this time is the eye in the hurricane, but if you're dealing with a defiant child, you may experience little relief. Take heart and take action; you can still influence deep change in your child's behavioral and thinking patterns at this age.
