Lack of a Positive Role Model
Because children learn through observation and experience, they need to have positive role models in their lives. A child can learn through example to have a can-do attitude, integrity, self-discipline, courage, compassion, and a positive regard for the people around him. Children can learn to contribute to their families, schools, and communities.
Often, this same process can make them vulnerable to learning all the wrong things from less-than-ideal role models. A child can just as easily learn negativity, violence, and contempt for his fellow man.
So who can the average child look up to? Certainly not a sports figure as an increasing number of them have criminal records or are involved in other forms of scandal. So who then … movie stars? Teen television celebrities? Pop music icons? Not many would make the A-list of positive role models for kids. That leaves it up to parents and close family members, and perhaps teachers and coaches.
Does your child have positive role models in his life?
Your child needs to be exposed to adults who model positive, responsible, caring behavior. For instance, if you want your child to learn how to resolve conflict in a healthy, civil manner, he needs to see adults who can do the same.
