If you are ever in a hurry and need your dog to relieve himself now, and not ten or twenty minutes from now, or if you are traveling and find that your dachshund is reluctant to relieve himself in a strange place, the “Potty!” command can be a lifesaver.

To train this command, each time your dachsie is getting ready to go to the bathroom and has just begun relieving itself, say quietly, “Deuce, Go potty!” or whatever you want your command to be (maybe, “Deuce, Find your spot!”). Be sure to praise your puppy or dog when he relieves himself, and reward him with a treat.

What happens is that you are teaching your dachshund to actually look for a place to relieve himself on command. It really does work. And you will be so glad you included this skill in your dachshund's repertoire.
