Accidents Happen: Just Clean Them Up

No matter how perfect you may think your puppy or adult dachshund is, that dachsie is bound to have an accident sooner or later. The easiest mistakes to clean up are those that happen in the crate. Simply remove the newspapers, wipe down the crate (using a mild soap, if necessary), dry it, and put down clean newspapers.

If your dachshund has an accident on a hard, nonporous floor, you can wipe up the offending matter or liquid, and clean it with your usual cleaner. The really difficult flooring to clean is carpeting. If the mistake is excrement, pick it up and clean as much as you can off the top of the carpet fibers.

If your dachshund urinates on your carpet, this is more difficult to clean up efficiently. If you've caught the accident quickly enough and the urine has not had time to soak through to the pad, you can blot the wet spot up and follow with recommended procedures from the carpet manufacturer. If the urine has soaked into the carpet, blot up as much as you possibly can with paper towels. Once you can no longer get any more liquid up, treat with a pet odor and stain remover.

Avoid using products containing ammonia when attempting to eradicate the smell of dog urine. Urine has ammonia in it, which enhances the “urine” smell from the dog's point of view.
