The First Day at Home

Home at last! Finally, you can enjoy your puppy all by yourself in the quiet of your home. Oh, you invited some friends over? Your inlaws? And the neighbors? It's tempting to throw a big puppy party on your dachsie's first day home, but you should think twice before doing this.

Puppies need quite a bit of sleep, particularly when they are still small. You've probably only seen your puppy at the breeder's home running wild and tumbling with her littermates. Though your puppy will most likely be more than happy to visit with everyone and play, don't overdo it for her on her first day home. She will need her sleep.

If you do have a gaggle of friends over to see your new dachshund, make sure you offer the puppy a nice, quiet place to rest. Consider setting up the puppy's crate near the commotion so she can see what's happening but far enough away that she won't feel overwhelmed by all the sights and sounds of the day.
