Feeding Schedules
Feedings should be as equally spaced as possible. For example, your adult dog should be fed at twelve-hour intervals (for example, 7 A.M. and 7 P.M.). Wait at least one hour before or after exercising your dog to prevent digestion difficulties. For additional leadership training, experts recommend making your dachshund sit quietly during your family's food preparation and dinner and then feeding. This follows from the way dogs in a pack would naturally eat, where the top dog dines first. However, if this doesn't fit your schedule, you can still maintain top-dog status by requiring your dachshund to sit or lie quietly in her crate while you eat.
How and where you feed your dog helps to establish leadership. Have your puppy sit before you put food in her bowl, making the puppy earn her food. Also, don't leave food out in her bowl for longer than thirty minutes. You want to make sure that the puppy realizes that you, the leader, control the resources and that the food comes from you.
