Make-a-Face Sandwich

When you need a reason to play with food, try this special lunchtime treat. You can also use tuna or egg salad as the sandwich base. The possibilities are endless!

DIFFICULTY: MEDIUM

INGREDIENTS | MAKES 4 halves

  • 2 English muffins
  • ½ cup peanut butter
  • 1 apple, cut into slivers
  • 4 strawberries, halved
  • 1 banana, cut into slices
  • ¼ cup raisins or chocolate chips
  • ¼ cup shredded Cheddar cheese
  1. Place muffin halves on a plate.

  2. Wash fruit and cut it into pieces small enough to fit on an English muffin.

  3. Spread peanut butter over each muffin.

  4. Decorate your sandwich with any design you can think of, or try this:

    To make the face:

    • Place apple slivers to form mouth

    • Place strawberry half above apples to form nose

    • Add banana slices above the strawberry to make the eyes

    • Use raisins or chocolate chips to make eyebrows or mustache

    • Sprinkle cheese on top to make hair

  5. If you have any leftover fruit, raisins, or chocolate chips, eat them on the side. These are especially fun to make with (or for) your friends!

Food Trivia

The strawberry is the only agricultural product that has its seeds on the outside.

Banana Facts

A cluster of bananas is called a hand and consists of about 10–20 bananas, known as fingers. As bananas ripen, the starch inside turns to sugar; therefore, the riper the banana, the sweeter it tastes. Great Britain reported that in the year 2001 there were more than 300 banana-related accidents, most of them involving people slipping on banana peels.
