Pasta and Sautéed Turkey Sausage for Dogs Recipe

Italian-style sausage should contain only garlic and fennel seed. Do not purchase sausage that is labeled “hot” or contains lots of spices for your dog.

YIELDS ► 8 servings
SERVING SIZE ► ¼ cup
RECOMMENDED FOR ► Quick and easy

  • 6 ounces fusilli
  • 1 teaspoon virgin olive oil
  • 4 cloves garlic, sliced
  • ½ cup Italian-style turkey sausage
  • ¼ cup crushed tomatoes
  • 2 tablespoons Romano cheese, grated
  1. Bring a heavy pot of water to a rolling boil. Cook the fusilli for 7 minutes or until al dente and drain in a colander.

  2. While the fusilli is cooking, heat the olive oil in a heavy saucepan over medium heat. Add the sliced garlic and sauté till light brown.

  3. Remove the casing from the sausage and add the meat to the skillet. Break the sausage meat apart with a wooden spoon and cook until well browned, about 7 minutes.

  4. Add the crushed tomatoes and stir till combined. Continue cooking until tomatoes are heated through and sauce thickens slightly.

  5. Cut the fusilli with scissors or a knife and add it to the tomato-sausage mixture.

  6. Mix in the grated cheese and serve over kibble.

Al Dente

The term al dente comes from Italian, meaning “to the bite” or “to the tooth” and refers to the ideal doneness of cooked pasta. The most common misnomer is “to the teeth” means that the pasta should stick to the teeth. In actuality, pasta that does stick to your teeth is undercooked. Pasta that is soft, floury, or lacking in texture is overcooked. Perfectly cooked pasta should offer slight resistance and hold its shape.
