Sweet Pea Tarts for Dogs Recipe
In this recipe, peas and potatoes replace the berries and custard you would normally see in a traditional fruit tart.
YIELDS ► 15 mini-tarts
RECOMMENDED FOR ► Quick and easy
- 1 box mini-phyllo dough shells
- 2 potatoes, baked
- 2 tablespoons organic chicken broth
- 2 tablespoons freshly grated Romano cheese
- ½ cup frozen peas, thawed
Preheat the oven to 350ºF. Defrost the phyllo shells, place them on a cookie sheet, and bake them for 5 minutes or until crisp.
While the baked potatoes are still warm, use a fork and mash them with the chicken broth and grated cheese.
Fill the tart shells with warmed mashed-potato mixture, trying to round the top of the filling. Gently press the peas onto the potato filling, covering completely as if it were a fruit tart. Serve immediately.
Fillo or Phyllo
Fillo is a paper-thin sheet of dough that is easily layered, formed, and baked. The dough can be used to create everything from sweet to savory dishes and is known for its delightful crunch and flakiness. Phyllo dough is most famous for its use in the Greek dessert baklava, a honey and nut pastry, and spanikopita, a turnover filled with spinach and feta cheese.
