12–18 Months

Egg whites: these may cause an allergic reaction, so never serve before 12 months.

Honey: because of a risk of botulism, never serve before 12 months.

Cow's milk: due to high allergenic potential and digestive issues, hold off on cow's milk until at least 12 months. Also hold off as a substitute for breastmilk or formula because cow's milk doesn't have iron in it.

Citrus fruits: oranges, grapefruit, lemons. Withhold these until 12 months, because they cause an allergic reaction in some children.

Pasta: spaghetti, rotini, other fun shapes. Cook well, and supervise your baby while she is eating them.

Protein: beans, lentils. Go easy on the amounts, because too much fiber can lead to diarrhea. Offer cooked meats and mixed vegetables with pasta, such as chicken and rice or beef noodle stew.
