Banana Apple Farina by Shana Priwer and Cynthia Phillips
Farina is a good alternative to the standard oatmeal and rice cereal recipes. Because it's made of wheat, be sure not to serve to any child with a wheat allergy or sensitivity. This recipe can also be made with milk instead of water for children older than 1 year old.
4 Servings
3 tablespoons farina
½ cup unsweetened applesauce
½ very ripe banana
1 cup water
Bring the water to a boil. Add farina and stir well.
Reduce heat and cook until the farina thickens, about 1–3 minutes, stirring continuously. Remove from the heat and allow to cool for about 10 minutes.
Peel banana, removing any brown spots. Fork-mash until completely creamed.
Stir the applesauce and banana into the cooled cereal.
Where Do I Find Farina?
Baby rice and baby oatmeal are common staples in the neighborhood grocery store. Farina, though, may be a little more difficult to find. Try looking in the hot-cereal aisle, next to quick-cooking oats and other breakfast cereals.
