Ground Turkey

Why offer your toddler ground turkey instead of ground beef? Two simple reasons:health and variety. Turkey is generally lower in fat than ground beef, so it's a good choice for the entire family. In addition, most recipes for spaghetti sauce, lasagna and other meat dishes use ground beef — so why not introduce a new flavor?

2 Servings

4 ounces turkey, ground

1 tablespoon onion, diced

⅛ teaspoon prepared mustard

½ tablespoon oil

  • Heat the oil in a frying pan. Add onion and sauté for 4–5 minutes, or until the onion is translucent.

  • Mix the turkey and mustard in a small bowl. Add to the frying pan and sauté for 8-10 minutes, or until the meat is completely cooked.

  • Allow to cool; then either serve as is or fork-mash if desired.

Turkey Combinations

Because of its low fat content, ground turkey can be drier than fattier meats like ground beef. For this reason, especially with small children, it's a good idea to add it into a sauce. If preparing “stand-alone” ground turkey into patties, add liquid ingredients such as Worcestershire sauce, prepared mustard, or milk — they will make the meat more tender.
