Mashed Cooked Apples with Milk by Shana Priwer and Cynthia Phillips
Apples are one of the simplest fruits for your baby to enjoy, and they're available all year-round! For this recipe, pick firm, sweet apples like Yellow Delicious, Fuji, or McIntosh. Apples that are more tart, like Granny Smith, will also work, but you may want to add a little sugar to the final product before serving it.
2 Servings
1 apple
½ cup water
¼ cup milk (or soy milk)
Peel and core the apple, and cut into 1-inch pieces.
Place apple pieces in small pan with water — water should almost cover apple pieces. Add a little more water if necessary.
Bring to a boil; then simmer over low heat until apple pieces are tender, about 10 minutes. Check while cooking to make sure that there is still water left, and add more water while cooking if necessary.
When cooked, remove apples from heat. If there is a lot of excess water, drain off.
Add milk to pot and mash with a fork or potato masher until desired consistency, mixing well.
Choosing Apples
Try moving beyond the typical grocery store apple varieties of Granny Smith, Yellow Delicious, and Red Delicious. Some good types to try are Fuji, Braeburn, McIntosh, Gala, Pippin, Pink Lady, and other local varieties. Try your local farmer's market for apples that are in season — you'll be amazed at how much better they taste!
