Saltines
These crisp crackers are just as good with soup as the store-bought kind, maybe better. Sprinkle the tops with coarse salt, sesame seed, or leave plain.
INGREDIENTS | YIELDS 100 CRACKERS
- 2 cups all-purpose flour, whole-wheat flour, or a combination
- 1 teaspoon salt
- ½ teaspoon baking soda
- ¼ cup butter
- 1½ cups sour milk
- 1 egg
Preheat oven to 400°F. Lightly grease baking sheet.
Sift dry ingredients into a large bowl.
Cut in butter until coarse crumbs are formed. Add milk and egg; blend together.
Knead dough until smooth. Let rest 10 minutes. Roll very thin on a floured surface.
Cut in squares or other shapes; place on baking sheet and prick with a fork. Sprinkle with salt crystals if desired. Bake 10 minutes.
