Basic Butter Cookies

For a little change of flavor, you can substitute orange juice, lemon juice, or lime juice for the milk in this recipe.

INGREDIENTS | YIELDS 36 COOKIES

  • 1 cup unsalted butter, room temperature
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla
  • 2 tablespoons cream or milk
  • 2½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  1. Combine butter and sugar; mix until creamy. Add egg, vanilla, and milk; blend well.

  2. Add dry ingredients; stir to blend. Chill at least 3 hours, or overnight.

  3. Preheat oven to 400°F. Line a cookie sheet with parchment.

  4. On a floured surface, roll out dough to ¼" thickness. Roll 1/3 of dough at a time, keeping remaining dough chilled.

  5. Cut with cookie cutters; transfer to baking sheet. Bake 6–10 minutes. Cool completely.
