Many children have difficulty leaving home to go to school, staying with relatives while their parents are away, or sleeping over at their friends' houses. This separation from home into the greater world can cause extreme distress for these children and their families and, if not treated, may lead to the development of other anxiety disorders. This chapter focuses on separation anxiety disorder and its criteria, onset, and treatment.
