Present Yourself in a Professional Manner
If you're getting to the point where people seek you out and ask for demo tapes, press releases, and writing samples, it's time for you to start looking like a pro in the following areas.
Your Press Kit
What is a press kit? It is a package of information about yourself. It might include a photo, press clippings and reviews, a list of clubs you have worked, TV appearances, and a bio. You can use it to send to club owners and entertainment journalists to promote club appearances. It should look nice and professional. Don't make it wacky. Avoid padding it with fake quotes like “Jeff is the funniest comedian I have ever seen!” — Jeff's mom. If you don't have a lot of experience yet, just put what you have and add to it as things come along. Don't make up fake quotes or fake credits — they will come back to haunt you.
A Demo Tape
You need two types of demo tapes, one for clubs and one for auditions. A tape for clubs just needs to show you doing well. You don't have to show a complete set, just a montage of quick lines and audience response.
If you really want a professional tape, invest in a wireless microphone system that plugs into your camcorder. Sound is usually the biggest problem you will face when making a demo tape. A wireless mic system allows you to record you and the audience separately and at different levels so that you get the best of each. Viewers watching your tape can hear you and the response perfectly.
For an audition, you need a complete set from beginning to end. You need to show consistency, not just a bunch of high spots from multiple shows. Producers want to see your start, your middle, and your closer. Tape yourself as often as you can; you never know when that perfect set might occur.
Your Website
You can use your website as a press kit that anyone can access 24/7. You can also use it to show off demo tapes of performances, link to your YouTube videos, and promote your upcoming appearances. You can also use it to promote yourself further by linking it to and from your Facebook and MySpace pages.
By cultivating your public image, you make yourself a professional, someone with whom people will want to do business. Keep your resources simple. Provide valuable information and make it easy to use, and you will look like the pro you want to be.
