Basic Baked Potato

4 baking (russet or Idaho) potatoes

2 tablespoons (or to taste) butter or margarine

  • Preheat oven to 400°.

  • Wash the potatoes and scrub to remove any dirt. Poke a few holes in each potato with a fork. Place directly on the middle oven rack.

  • Bake the potatoes for 45 minutes or until done. To test for doneness, pierce the potatoes with a fork. It should go through easily. Remove from oven. Cut each potato in half lengthwise while still hot. Add the butter or margarine. Serve hot.

Serves 4

After cooking, you can load the potato with sour cream, bacon bits, chives, shredded cheese, or your own favorite toppings.
