Although bank notes have existed for more than a thousand years, they have not been around as long as coins. The hobby of bank note collecting is in many respects still in its infancy, although its popularity has been gaining rapidly in recent years. There are many similarities between coin and bank note collecting, and many hobbyists collect both. There are some subtle differences between coin and bank note collecting as well that will be addressed in this chapter.
