To keep your students safe during emergencies, you must exercise a sufficient amount of control so your kids will suffer no harm. You don't have to become a screaming, red-faced demon; but by the same token, you absolutely must be firm, clear-headed, and thoroughly in command of the precious human beings whose welfare has been entrusted to you. You can take proper command of emergency situations by being properly prepared and knowing what to do before an emergency develops.
