Research Your Students' Cumulative Files

Schools maintain a cumulative file, also known as a cum (pronounced “kyoom”), for every student in the school. A cumulative file is a comprehensive record containing a student photograph, contact information, health data, grades, teachers' comments, and other personal information about a student. Parents, teachers, and authorized educational personnel may access the cumulative files, but otherwise these records are confidential. Cumulative files are generally kept in a series of file cabinets in the main office.

Peruse the cumulative files for each of your students before the first instructional day to determine if any of your students have special medical needs, emotional or behavioral issues, or academic issues. If you diligently study the cumulative records, you'll be better prepared to address the needs of each student before instruction begins.
