Today, people use the word hero to describe any person who does something brave or admirable. The ancients, however, had different ideas about what makes a hero — and bravery was just the beginning. Heroes had to satisfy a long list of requirements, some of which modern people would find surprising. This chapter defines what heroism meant to the ancients and tells the stories of some of classical mythology's most illustrious heroes.
