Daughter of Zeus, Artemis took her place among the twelve great Olympians as the goddess of archery and hunting. She was the elder twin sister of Apollo, and brother and sister were devoted to each other. A virgin goddess, Artemis valued her own chastity and demanded chastity of her followers. She was usually depicted as a young, untamed, independent woman, roaming the forests and mountain-sides and forever on the hunt.
