Natural and Home-Prepared Diets

Natural and home-prepared diets are free of preservatives, coloring, and chemicals. If you want the benefits of feeding an allnatural product but don't want to give up the convenience of commercially prepared foods, you may be interested in feeding your Chi one of several natural dog foods that are available. Allnatural dog foods come in dry, canned, and frozen varieties and are regulated by the same state feed officials that regulate other commercial pet foods.

Home-prepared diets are without a doubt the best way to make sure your Chihuahua is receiving human-grade meats, organically grown whole grains, pesticide-free vegetables, and vitamins, minerals, and other important nutrients in their most digestible forms. These diets cannot be thrown together, however, and they must follow very precise measurements developed by veterinary nutritionists.

Home-prepared diets are time-consuming to prepare; however, because of the small amount of food the Chihuahua consumes, these diets can be made in larger batches and frozen in individual portions. The biggest mistake owners make with a home-prepared diet is that they become lax in measuring and weighing ingredients or start making substitutions. To feed a home-prepared diet successfully, you must be vigilant in not varying the recipe in any way

Safe food-handling hygiene is critical when preparing raw homemade diets. Raw meat carries the risk of exposing you (and your dog) to E. coli and salmonella bacteria. Hard freezing meats prior to handling may decrease this risk; however, the only sure way is to cook the meats thoroughly and clean all surfaces that come in contact with the raw meats.
