Make the Foodie Rounds
Admit it. You love cheese; you've read a book about it. You will now spend more time than anyone can imagine in pursuit of cheese. Do you know what this means? You're well on your way to foodiedom. But don't worry, that's all part of the fun, and now, whenever you travel, you'll find yourself in pursuit of fabulous food. It's all good.
Specialty Food Stores
Here's a chance to visit all those wonderful food stores you've been hearing about. If you're headed to New York, make a beeline to Dean & Deluca, Fairway Market, and Murray's. If you're in San Francisco visit Cowgirl Creamery at the farmers' market in the Ferry Building (if you're there on a Saturday morning, you'll be dazzled by the local produce!), or one of the two Pasta Shops in Berkeley and Oakland. In Portland? Visit one of almost a dozen New Seasons Markets and Steve's Cheese shops. You get the idea. Fabulous food stores are out there, and a visit to one of them is sure to be delightful to any cheese lover.
Wineries and Breweries
Wineries and breweries are also a great place to locate cheese. Aim for ones with restaurants or picnic areas; it's likely they'll offer cheese on the menu or for sale by the piece or the pound. More than likely, the cheeses will be local and paired with some of the wine or beer.
Farmers' Markets
If you're in a new town on a weekend, head for the local farmers' market to find some cheese. Not only will you have a chance to taste new and interesting cheeses, you might get to meet the cheese maker at the market. Stop and taste, have a chat, and enjoy the local scene. It's always a treat.
In the Produce Section
Is the town you're visiting short on specialty food stores, farmers' markets, and wineries? Then find out where the best produce is sold, and see if you can find some cheese there. Retailers know that people interested in fresh produce are likely to be interested in gourmet cheese, and if there is any local cheese to be sold, it could be there or in meat markets.
