Liturgy incorporates the formalized expressions, or rites, of public worship in many religions, and Catholicism has certainly developed its own liturgical ensemble. The Catholic Church teaches that those who participate in the liturgy are sanctified through it. The word liturgy descends from a Greek word that means “public duty,” because liturgies are always conducted in a public setting.
