Over the centuries, the Church has worked to understand Mary's theological role in Catholicism, and it has proclaimed five Marian dogmas (or truths) that devout believers uphold. The dogmas state that Mary is the Mother of God; that Mary is a perpetual virgin; that she was born by Immaculate Conception; that she was assumed into Heaven and did not suffer mortal decay; and that she is the Mother of the Church.
