Catholics — as well as Catholic institutions — are a large presence in our society. Catholic schools, colleges, and universities offer religious as well as secular education, preparing students to go out into the world as politicians, businesspeople, teachers, and so on. Catholic hospitals provide medical care to believers and nonbelievers alike. This chapter examines how Catholicism influences the secular lives of Catholics and their stances on political, environmental, and social issues.
