The Reformation and Counter Reformation periods of church history were transformative in the creation of a diversity of Christian denominations. The battles the church faced in the sixteenth century found new manifestations, both internal and external to the institution, over the next two centuries. Disagreements over local versus universal church authority as well as theology occurred simultaneously with the French Revolution and the Napoleonic Wars. These wars transformed the face of Europe, forcing the church to adapt in order to survive.
