Gambling Overseas

Many countries offer a variety of gaming options, from racinos and card rooms to full-fledged casinos. If you're lucky enough to win significant amounts of money abroad, you might have to deal with different reporting requirements, customs declarations, and tax authorities. For example, U.S. winners at Canadian casinos have to pay Canada tax on their winnings, but they can file for a refund of that tax under certain circumstances. U.S. customs rules require you to report large amounts of currency that you bring into the United States from abroad, and other countries may require you to declare how much currency you're bringing in or taking out of the country.

Regulations vary depending on the country you're visiting and, usually, the length of your visit. Keep in mind that with the heightened emphasis on security and antiterrorism efforts, you may find yourself answering more questions and filling out more forms than you did in the past. If you have questions about the requirements, ask the casino personnel; they should be able to give you the information you need. You also can check with your travel agent, especially if he or she handles a lot of gambling-related bookings.
