Cartoonists through the years have developed a symbolic language that has been handed down through the years. These symbols represent motion, ideas, sounds, and other concepts that are difficult to depict visually. They are easily assimilated by the artist and readily understood by the reader. Along with drawing and writing, they round out a cartoonist's arsenal of narrative tools. And with new symbols constantly added to the cartoon vocabulary every day, the storytelling possibilities are infinite.
