The single-panel cartoon is similar to an editorial cartoon in that a single image rather than a sequence of illustrations is used to illustrate the text. Although sequential cartooning — such as the comic strip and the comic book — tends to get more attention, single-panel cartoons have a longer history and continue to dominate the magazine market. This kind of cartoon often relies heavily on a well-crafted punch line. For that reason, it is sometimes called a gag cartoon.
