Handling Serious News
There's an adage in comedy that says “humor is tragedy plus time.” But as an editorial cartoonist, you don't have the luxury of waiting for the sting to wear off a tragedy. Sometimes you will be called on to deal with some very serious, heartbreaking, unfunny issues.
This is when your mettle as editorial cartoonist is truly tested. You need to make an appropriate, respectful statement — and humor is seldom an option. In these cases, try to find a phrase or a thought that seems to sum up the story — like a quote from a slain leader.
In 1992, when people in the city of Los Angeles rioted in reaction to the Rodney King trial verdict, it was more appropriate to reflect on the serious nature of the situation with a somber message.
Make sure your image reflects the somber tone of your words. This is not the place for harsh caricature. These are the cartoons that really touch people, reminding readers of the power of this art form. A well-designed cartoon during serious turmoil can become a lasting image of your newspaper's coverage.
