The greatest challenge for a cartoonist is to convey several messages in a limited space and a short amount of time. Characters must express feelings beyond those written in the word balloons floating above their heads. In some cases, emotions may even contradict those words. Obviously, the head is the most powerful mode of expressing emotions. But to create characters that truly emote, you need to study gesture and posture, and that means drawing hands and feet. Learning to draw these features well will result in characters that project a full range of feeling.
