How to Set Up a Blog

Blogs, or weblogs, are journals, diaries, or newsletters that are updated periodically. They are for posting personal opinion and information for general reading by the public. They can be private and even require a subscription or password. They are updated in chronological order.

Many business websites use a blog to tease or advertise the basic content of their site as it is updated or changed. The blog provides a link to the whole story or article. Where the article may present information, the blog might be used to give the author's editorial opinion about the information.

Personal blogs have become quite popular to help families keep in touch. A young mother may use the blog as a daily diary of life with her children. She might post pictures and write stories about them. She can also post her children's artwork and an anecdote about it. It helps her let friends and families know what's happening in their lives when she doesn't have time to call or write. A blog can be updated at 2:00 A.M. when she has time to work quietly and reflect on the day.

Personal blogs can be used for any purpose. They have, however, been known to get employees in trouble for venting about their employer publicly, so there are some common-sense issues to consider. Even a private site can be hacked into or the text printed out.

A blog could be a perfect way to keep your family informed about your parents or in-laws. It can help encourage communication from extended family, and photos can help tell a story far better sometimes than words. While it can be a time-consuming process, you can use a blog to communicate with many people at one time and save yourself dozens of phone calls or letters. It can be updated at anytime of the day or night.

You can set up your blog at a variety of sites. Some of the more well known are Blogger.com and WordPress.com. You simply register for free and sign in. Then, using their software and website, you set up your blog and begin writing and uploading pictures from your computer. These sites have great information and help or support sites. The hardest part may be in deciding what to write.

Use the opportunity to record and reflect on your experiences. Use it to help you find some humor and to laugh about the day's challenges. A blog can help make a situation real to those who are not so involved. Use the opportunity to let them know how much time and effort you put into the care-giving process. Write about a typical day and all of the things you have done. Of course, be careful not to say anything that would hurt or offend your parents.
