Sauerkraut Black Forest Cake
If you're lucky enough to have a vendor who sells homemade sauerkraut at your local farmers' market, use some of it to try this tasty treat!
INGREDIENTS | SERVES 12
- 1 18.25-ounce package devil's food cake mix
- ⅔ cup water
- 3 eggs
- ½ cup vegetable oil
- 1 cup sauerkraut
- 1 15-ounce can cherry pie filling
- 1 recipe Whipping Cream for garnish
Preheat oven to 350°F. Grease and flour cake pans. Set aside.
Beat cake mix, water, eggs, and oil in a large mixing bowl, using an electric mixer set to high speed until all ingredients are completely incorporated. Gently fold in sauerkraut.
Turn batter into pans and bake for 30 minutes or until the center of the cake bounces back when touched gently.
Allow cake to cool for 15 minutes in the pan before turning out onto a wire rack.
Top with cherry pie filling and a dollop of whipped topping.
