The origins of Zen are found in China when Bodhidharma went there in the sixth century. In China it is called Chan, in Korea it is called Son, in Japan it is called Zen, all meaning “meditation.” This chapter will explore Zen history, philosophy, and practice. Zen has captured the popular imagination in the West, and the center of gravity of Zen practice worldwide has shifted to the West. Zen offers a fresh interpretation of the Buddha's teachings and forms of practice that are straightforward and profound.
