Not all questions are yes-no questions. Some questions begin with a “question word” or interrogative word (also called a “wh-question” because in English the interrogative word begins with those letters). If you use an interrogative word, you don't need to use the rising intonation at the end of the utterance. The presence of the word itself will suffice. These are the most common interrogative words in Portuguese:

Other interrogative words are followed by verbs, not nouns. These are listed below.

In this group, notice that these interrogatives are followed by either a verb (vai, custa) or a subject and a verb (você pôs, ela está). Sometimes inversion is allowed in the first case, when the interrogative is followed only by the verb. So, for some interrogative-word questions you can say Quando seu avô morreu? or Quando morreu seu avô? (When did your grandfather die?), and they mean the same thing. Try to complete the exercises below on the ways to form a question in Portuguese.

Here is a typical conversation between a reporter and a famous person in Brazil.

Q: Olá, como vai? (Hi, how are you?)

A: Bem, obrigada, e você? (Well, thanks, and you?)

Q: Muito bem, agora que você está aqui conversando conosco. Quanto tempo você vai ficar em São Paulo? (Very well, now that you are here talking to us. How long will you stay in São Paulo?)

A: Uns dois dias, promovendo o filme. (A couple of days, promoting the movie.)

Q: Quando é a estréia do filme? (When is the release of the movie?)

A: Já nessa semana que vem! (Already this next week!)

Q: Você gostou de trabalhar com o diretor? (Did you like working with the director?)

A: A melhor parte é que ele é um profissional. (The best part is that he is such a professional.)

Q: Você acha que o filme terá sucesso internacional? (Do you think the movie will have international success?)

A: Acho que sim, tem um apelo para a gente jovem. (I think so, it has an appeal to younger people.)

Q: Qual foi a parte mais dificíl de interpretar para você? (What was the most difficult part about acting for you?)

A: Acho que a parte dramática é mais fácil que a comédia. (I think the dramatic roles are easier than the comedic roles.)

Q: Como anda a família, tudo bem? (How's the family doing, all right?)

A: Tudo em ordem. (Everything is fine.)

Q: Aonde vocês vão passar as férias? (Where will you guys go for vacation?)

A: Não posso dizer, é segredo de estado! (I can't tell, it's a state secret!)

Q: Você promete voltar ao nosso programa antes do final do ano? (Do you promise to come back to our show before the end of the year?)

A: Claro que sim, com o maior prazer! (Of course, it will be my pleasure!)

Q: Um grande abraço e obrigada! (A big hug to you, and thanks!)
