Eles se surpreenderam que ela estivesse/fosse tão magra. (They were surprised that she was so skinny.) [Note: use estivesse for a recent change of state and fosse for a permanent condition.]
Se não for muito tarde, vou pegar o ônibus. (If it is not too late, I will take the bus.)
Enquanto ele precisar de mim, eu vou ajudá-lo. (While he needs me, I will help him.)
Se eu me lembrasse de tudo, seria mais fácil. (If I remembered everything, it would be much easier.)
