Establishing a Potty Spot
Establishing a potty spot is easier in the beginning, so it's best to work on potty training and bonding early on. This method can be used to keep the majority of your yard from being soiled. If you're paper training, this lesson teaches the pup exactly where to relieve himself inside the house.
As noted earlier, all canines are hard-wired to relieve themselves where they can smell the scent left behind by other canines. Getting your puppy to potty in one place will make that spot smell like urine or feces. As you keep going out there when the puppy needs to potty, the smell will grow stronger. You must still pick up after your pup, of course, but that sensitive nose will help habituate him to potty in the spot you have chosen.
The same principles apply in the house if you need to paper train your pup. You need to get him to go on the papers in one spot in the house initially. After that, it's a little easier, and you can buy papers that are impregnated with the scent of urine. Of course, this scent won't be noticeable to you, but for a dog, it's all the persuasion needed.
If after several weeks or months of housetraining you are not seeing success most of the time, you may need to go back to square one. This likely means that your pup has gotten confused along the way and needs to be taught the basics once more. Don't get impatient with him — he'll get it right eventually.
