Published authors have widely differing opinions on the need for literary agents. Some are adamantly opposed to bringing a third party into the relationship between editors and writers, while others are just as adamant in declaring that, without their agent's help, their career never would have gotten so far. While it's true that you don't always need an agent to succeed in publishing, the fact remains that almost four out of five manuscripts purchased by major publishers today come from writers with agents.
