Targeted fiction includes genres featuring special characteristics that readers — and therefore editors — look for. Most such fiction has unwritten rules about plot lines, characters, settings, and so forth, rules created in nearly equal parts by what readers expect and what publishers know readers look for. Still, there's plenty of room for your own creativity within the broad parameters of these targeted categories.
