More than half of all books sold in the United States every year are novels aimed at adults. There are a dozen broad fiction genres, or categories, and dozens more subgenres, each with its own distinguishing elements. Mass-appeal fiction tends to cross gender, education, and income lines, attracting a broad range of readers. These genres also tend to have the most “breakout books,” titles that, often unexpectedly, reach bestseller status.
