Butterfly Shot

This is a set-up shot that, if set up precisely, will let you pocket six balls at a time with each ball going into a different pocket. Forget impressing others with this shot, you'll amaze yourself when you get this one under your belt.

To set up this shot, you should picture the shape of a butterfly. Divide the table into four sections by thinking in terms of imaginary lines. The long center line stretches from one short rail to the other short rail — down the length of the table — while the other line, the cross-table line, crosses over the long center line from one side pocket to the other side pocket.

The shot is made up of two lines of three balls facing each other at one end of the table. The center ball in each line of three is slightly pushed in so that the formation of balls resembles an X or a butterfly shape.

Standing at one short end of the table, place the two center object balls about 1fi inches apart, centering them so that each ball is an equal distance away from the center line. Make sure the balls are at least 8 inches from the cross-table line. Now you can place the other four balls.

On the side nearest the short rail, place one ball slightly to the right of the ball on the right, and the other ball slightly to the left of the ball on the left. Do the same with the other two balls on the far side of the center balls. The balls will form an X, or a butterfly shape.

Essential

When making a butterfly shot, you should walk around the table a couple of times to make sure the balls are lined up precisely. Don't forget to account for throw.

The cue ball should be on the spot along the long center line. You will shoot down the center of the table between the two center (inverted) balls. Shoot straight, with a medium-firm stroke and a little bit of draw, and each ball should go into its own pocket. The center balls will go into the side pockets and the other balls will go into the corner pockets nearest to them.
