Serving the Body of Christ (1 Peter 4:7–11)

Peter told his readers that the end of the world was coming soon, and for that reason they needed to be both “earnest and disciplined” in their prayer lives. But more important than that, he said they needed to show love for one another. Peter himself heard Jesus tell the disciples, “Your love for one another will prove to the world that you are my disciples” (John 13:35), and he wanted his readers to understand the importance of believers having deep love for one another, “for love covers a multitude of sins” (1 Peter 4:8). He even gave believers a practical way to demonstrate that love when he told them to cheerfully share their homes with those who needed a meal or a place to stay (1 Peter 4:9).

Peter also said that believers are to use the spiritual gifts God has given them in service of one another. Be it speaking, helping others, or whatever gifts we have, we are to use them with all the strength God gives us so that everything we do will bring glory to God through Jesus Christ (1 Peter 4:10–11).
