Changing Life Spans

Christians believe the oldest person who ever lived was named Methuselah. When he died, shortly before the global Flood, he was 969 years old. How could anyone live for almost 1,000 years? Well, the Bible says the average life span before the Flood was 912 years. For example, Adam lived to be 930. His son Seth was 912 when he died. Enosh was 905; Jared was 962; and Lamech, the father of Noah, was 950. But after the Flood, life spans dramatically decreased. Here are some examples:

  • Noah: 950 years old

  • Shem: 600 years old, only one generation from Noah

  • Eber: 464 years old, four generations from Noah

  • Peleg: 239 years old, five generations from Noah

  • Terah: 205 years old, nine generations from Noah

  • Abraham: 175 years old, ten generations from Noah

  • Jacob: 147 years old, twelve generations from Noah

  • Moses: 120 years old, seventeen generations from Noah The norm eventually became the famed “three score and ten” (Psalms 90:10), which happens to be the average lifespan of men and women in today's world.
