Getting Around Town
Babies don't much care where they're going when they go out, but moms tend to feel a little aimless without a destination. Stores are great places to take babies. Grocery stores, furniture stores, and book stores are all filled with brightly colored objects of various shapes, and people who love to smile at babies. Doors designed for wheelchair access are also stroller-friendly.
Stores and Malls
Go grocery shopping. Your infant car seat may be designed to clip safely to the seat of a shopping cart, or place it inside. Perhaps your local grocery store has special carts with built-in infant seats. (You may want to clean it with a baby wipe.) You can also shop with your baby in a front pack or sling or, if you're only purchasing a few things, leave her in her stroller.
Stay away from clothing stores with narrow aisles and tightly packed racks. Your baby will end up with her face shoved into a bunch of clothes, breathing chemicals like formaldehyde (used to protect the fabric), gnawing on sharp-edged tags, and probably drooling on something you can't throw in the washer.
Grocery stores often give free helium balloons to children. Tie it to the car seat, cart, or stroller for instant baby entertainment. If your baby is eating finger foods, try the free samples, or ask for a slice of a soft fruit.
Go to the mall, either indoor or outdoor. Talk to your baby about all the things you see. Admire the fountains and window shop (you don't have to actually buy anything).
See the Sights
Consider a day at a museum. Call ahead and confirm that the museum you are considering visiting allows a baby backpack or a stroller. (Some don't at all, some do on certain days.) Front-carriers and slings can pretty much go anywhere. When your baby is ready to eat, pick a bench in front of a painting you really like; if you're nursing, switch paintings when you switch breasts.
Be a tourist in your hometown. Big or small, your town probably has some tourist destinations locals are usually too busy to visit. If you live in a city, you probably already have your favorite spots to take visitors. Revisit them, and discover a few more.
